Neurological Disorders
Spinal and peripheral nerve injuries are common in all levels of athletes, causing symptoms such as weakness, numbness, tingling, or pain in the affected area. Most nerve injuries are related to entrapment and can result in long-term disability if not treated appropriately and immediately. Common neurological disorders include:
- Sciatica: Entrapment of a lumbar spinal nerve root
- Cervical radiculopathy: A pinched or irritated nerve in the neck
- Thoracic outlet syndrome: Entrapment of the nerves leading from the neck to the arm
- Carpal tunnel syndrome: Entrapment of the median nerve at the wrist
Sports-related, neurological injuries or conditions may necessitate further diagnostic studies, such as an EMG, which is used to study nerve conduction, or an MRI. Additional tests such as these are easily arranged, from our office at the time of your appointment, if necessary.
